Night Photography - C&C are welcome

    Dear All,

Night photography I have not done much. Recently I have taken some shots and have tried to process them. Kindly advise where all improvement is required. Or if there is some technique kindly advise.

    Regards,

    Tejal

    About the photos -

This pics are of Navratri (a festival of Gujarat) Maha aarti (prayer) with more than 35000 oil lamps at Surat Umiya Dham Mandir campus on the 8th day of Navratri. -
Umiya Mata is the deity worshipped by lakhs of Kadwa Patidars spread across the world. She is the the consort of the Mighty Shivashankar and the daughter of Parvatraj Dakhsa. She is the supreme power ‘Shakti’ and is also the mother of the Kartikeya and Ganesha.
The word Umiya is derived from the word Uma, meaning mother. She sits in the main temple of Unjha and is worshipped by her sons and daughters across Gujarat and World. She is worshipped in various forms, the most popular form is of “Parvati” and she is also known as Nav Chandi or Nav Durga due to the nine forms popularly worshiped.

Looks good, movement of people don't seem to be an issue, the lights and ornaments are the main subject to me.

For me, I prefer the second version of first shot, to me this is better because you have enhanced the smoke of the lamps amongst the worshippers, but cleared it in the sky.

However, I generally prefer the third image (out of 3rd and 4th).

The fourth has a couple of large inexplicable dark holes in the smoke, which is the main reason I don't like it.

Although the rotation in 4th is preferred.
The overall smoke brightness should ideally be somewhere between the third and fourth.

The first of each, I recently commented about trying to bring out the light in a night shot and most often it doesn't work. On both of your images there appears to be a haze created in the edit, not sure that's what you wanted to convey; but detail or conceived sharpness is lost with the effect.

I like the first of each image. Although all four shots are really nice. I like the darker of the shots though because the darker shots give me a better impression of night.

The way I shoot many night shots is to select auto bracketing with my Canon DSLR cameras. I combine auto bracketing with a minus one stop exposure compensation. I will shoot in programmed exposure control which will give me three bracketed shots every time I press the shutter button and the camera will stop shooting until I press the shutter button again.

Since, in many night shots, the major problem is over exposure rather than under exposure, my setup will give me one shot as the meter reads, one shot at -1 stop and the final shot at -2 stops.

I can decide what shutter speed and/or f/stop I want at the start of my bracketing since these values can be easily shifted when using Programmed Exposure control on a Canon DSLR.

    Thanks Dave for your feedback.

I will try to work on it again. All small inputs will help me to make my pic presentable .

Thanks John for your reply. Honestly, when i started processing, had no specific concept in my mind. I have just tried to control the over exposed area and to make the dark part visible (where the lamps are there). I will work again considering all the inputs. Hope something i could make better .

My camera was TV mode, so it was adjusting the aperture on its own. But I have tried to take 2-3 shots at different speed so that i can get desired result. Though, i hardly get opportunity to shoot at night, that too with tripod, it was bit difficult for me .

Second of the first and first of the second for me but that's not a decision I'd care to defend as all are good.
