About the white areas on top of the cicada: Is that glare or is that the color of the cicada? If it's glare, a polarizer would be a huge help. However, because the bright spots occur on different planes, a polarizer won't eliminate all of the glare and a polarizer will reduce the light by about 1 1/2 stops.

I wasn't using a flash and it was in the shade. So I am guessing natural colouring but there were a couple of bright areas in the eyes that needed cloning out. If I can find another one to shoot today I'll try to find out.
