Shutter Mirror got loose in my EOS 5D Can it be repaired

    Hello,
I was on my EOD 5D EF 24 - 105mm 1:4 L IS lens shooting out side -try to zoom in and out while taking a scenery. I could not see suddenly through camera viewfinder.
My heart sunk, feeling that the few months ago repaired EF 24-105mm 1:4 IS lens had gone on the blink again ( I have discussed about it here and following that posted for a repair). There is no error message on the display.

When I removed the lens , I could see then "Mirror" on the shutter loose (in the body of the camera). It looks like the glued mirror is got free. (The lens EF 24 -105mm 1:4 IS on a different camera body works well)

Is this something repairable? Can some one advice me please. Will it be expensive to repair?
(This camera was bought second hand by my late father in law, and has sings of it's been used by a professional)

    Regards

You could take it along to a Canon authorised repairer. They might suggest that it would be best to pay for a service and can probably tell you what the repair will cost on top of that.

Might sound odd but when I had mine serviced they asked for a phone number in case the shutter was at end of life. If it's at 100k or close they might suggest replacing it but that is up to the owner. If however it breaks and you just take the camera in for repair there is still a service cost effectively as the camera has to be dismantled. It seems most of the cost of a service is dismantling the camera so might as well have other things done if needed at the same time.

I used these people. Canon did have a list of authorised service centres on their web site

The mirror just fell out as soon as I removed the Lens.. it is that mirror angled at 45 degrees, you could see when remove the lens from the body of the camera is loose free.

    Hi Arun,

It's a known fault with the Canon 5D. Contact Canon and ask for a repair...they do it free of charge.

    Thanks for that information.
I sent in a service request describing the issue to Lemann yesterday (Sunday) and received an acknowledgement immediately. I have not heard from them since.
After seeing your post, I will e-mail Canon UK and see what happens.

The mirror became loose, has on its back surface three marks, I presume where glue must have been applied to stick it to the shutter.

I concur. Although it might be past the date stipulated for the repairs, if I were you I would push very hard for a free service: also - it is good that you are the original purchaser and the only owner of the camera.

    Thank you Robert & Bill,
You two are correct. I have received reply from H Lehmann suggesting to send it in with in the next few days if I wish to get it done free of charge. Fair play..
Also received an e-mail from Canon UK with the following message

    "Main mirror detachment issue

For more detailed information regarding the recognised issue with this camera model, please refer to the information concerning the main mirror detachment of the EOS 5D. The repair will be free of charge. The notification, which was first published first on February 3, 2009, was scheduled to end on September 30, 2015. However, the service meanwhile has been extended until September 30, 2016."

I am just back from work & saw these messages... I will be contacting H Lehmann tomorrow morning to arrange to dispatch my camera for repair.

    Once again Thank you

Just in the nick of time Arun,

Sounds very promising, good luck with it.

It occurs to me that "H Lehmann" are on the customer's side. This should not be taken for granted. I think that should I ever be in the UK and be in need of assistance with my Canon gear, I would go to them.

Good luck; as Dave mentioned this looks very promising.

BTW, my 5D failed and spat out the mirror after 67 (or was it 87? I forget now) shots. That was more than 10 years ago. Very interesting incident: I was shooting an Awards Ceremony. My fall back was a 30D moved to that. Got Error message after a few shots. Moved to 20D, Flash failed after a few shots. Moved to Minolta 303b with 400 ASA Colour Film loaded and in the meantime rebooted 30D and the 20D and swapped Speedlite from the 5D to the 20D and continued with that camera.

That's was the only time I have had a major failure where I have had to actually "drop" a camera . . . and I dropped three, in very quick succession.

I still use that 5D (with replacement mirror assembly) today - it owes me nothing. Got to be around 100,000 + shots now.

I think you'll love your 5D when it comes back with a new mirror assembly.
