Life on the rocks (Part 2)

The obsession has turned into an addiction

Unfortunately the lighting was extremely harsh but it has it's advantages with exposure.

It must have been fun chasing these guys with a camera. Do they bite?

Nice series. Did you use an ND filter for keeping DoF shallow in the sun? I'll be sure to check part one of the series.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Dem,

I was clawed by a crab some years ago whilst sitting on rocks fishing, four neat slashes on my foot, so I'm always aware that they could be creeping up behind me But these guys are only about 3 to four inches across.

These were all shot with a D800 (no ND) at f/13 to f/14, 1/400s to 1/800s, ISO1000 to 1400 and all at max FL of 550mm (400x1.4). The DoF at that FL and shooting distance of 3 to 4 metres from the subject is very narrow. Previously I have shot these with a D300 at f/8 (wide open) to keep the ISO low due to noise and it's difficult to get both eyes within the DoF.

We have land crabs in our garden that occasionally find their way into the house, the dog corners them and they are on the meal table the next day

Capturing good water spray in a shot is my ultimate goal with these and a great lesson in learning how slow my brain to shutter reaction is Alan

Yes they are very photogenic Nandakumar and to be able to record them in such detail within their natural habitat and hopefully in interesting compositions sure is fun

I can see why you've become addicted Grahame - I think we have too.

They are kinda enchanting, in a spiky, nippy sorta way

    Enjoyed parts 1 and 2.

    Thanks, Dave
