    Life on the rocks

Having just completed AF fine tuning with my D300/80-400mm/1.4TX I have been putting it through its paces at one of my favourite spots for wasting time in the sun.

For anyone that is using a TX (tele converter) on a long rig and suspects their images are soft or not capturing focus where they expected it I highly recommend checking for front or rear focusing issues. At the focal lengths I want to use with these small subjects I found it was out almost as far as the maximum adjustment possible.

I'm now becoming obsessed with capturing these guys

This series and the accompanying narrative is a classic example of the results that come from taking the time and energy to understand one's equipment and then combining that understanding with artistic creativity.

I can see why you would be obsessed with capturing these crabs ( ??? ). Those eyes on them are really something.

I fully agree, and the only way to learn is to keep trying to get better at it.

Binnur, I think all small critters look cute when you can see them close up like these

But from experience I can tell you they will creep up and slash you with their claws

You are absolutely right William, and when you can incorporate using your camera with the thrill of catching one of these skittish critters you can hopefully justify the waste of time if you get some keepers
