Sort of Street, People, etc

I've been trying out my 50mm f/1.8 lens on a D60 Nikon which means I am going manual focus. One of these days I am going to stop kidding myself and use a tripod. Actually I have two, one a small tabletop and a 6' model but dislike carrying the large one and have trouble finding a good spot to set the smaller one. But I have been enjoying the trials and errors of shooting handheld.
This is a funk band that was playing outside Niagara Falls State Park.

Hi John: Nice job exposing for the highlights, just enough not to blow the whites on the band members. I really like this shot. A tripod would have helped, but not something you want to drag around and set up on the street. This looks sufficiently clear enough to me to make it a worthwhile shot. Don't know what your shutter speed was, but you did a good job taking this hand held.
I might want to try bringing up the shadows a bit, if you can do it without blowing the highlights in the band members suits. and I would definitly crop or clone out the pylons behind the stage, maybe even crop a bit off the top and the left hand side. Sort of like this. Hope you don't mind.

Hi Wendy,
The shutter speed was 1/20s and I don't mind the edit. Thanks for the compliment. When I first purchased the lens and realized I had to manually focus I was a bit concerned. However, after reading a few posts from this group the method became more understandable. Camera shake is a problem even with an autofocus lens and managing shutter speeds, controlling my stance and hold on the camera is necessary without a tripod. Having a fast lens is also a benefit.
