An unfrozen (physically) waterfall just frozen with a fast shutter speed.

It definitely looks like some kind of salt crystal formation, but I'll wait for someone else to guess correctly....

Water dripping from the side of a rock in a cave but shot in faster shutter speed? This is as close as I can get from Robin's hint...

The water would seem to be dripping in torrents - or is this multiple frozen images of dripping water combined?

    Another photo might help...

    so far we have established:

    • It is not actually frozen solid - it IS water frozen by shutter speed
    • The guess of a waterfall was very close...

Robin: You are absolutely correct. The water is "frozen" because of the shutter speed!

It is a sort of waterfall, but I am looking for what kind of waterfall now

    Someone washing the floor?

    Re: So what is it...?

You're correct in that it LOOKS like a crystal formation, which is why I liked the photo and thought it might cause some curiosity, but no not crystalline

Hi Binnur: always a joy to see your smiling face!

    Nope, not floor washing!

Looks like the tide-race (overflow channel), down the side of a reservoir from the last shot provided?

    Re: So what is it...?

Before reading the thread, I instantly thought it was the stopped action of a waterfall. Now that I've read the thread, I think it's the stopped action of a fountain of water.

    Spot on James!

    So what is it...?

The crystalline effect is because the reservoir was full and with a bit of a breeze the waves washed over the top of the spillway in a series that, when "frozen" by the camera, looked like they were actually ice.

The image is actually of the Lower Nihotupo Dam Spillway in the Waitakere Ranges in west Auckland

To demonstrate further, the shot below is of a couple of ducks bracing their feet against the spillway as they sit on the dam. In the background you can see the wave effect

    James: absolutely correct as well!

    Re: So what is it...?

Hi Richard: Close... the overflow from a dam as above, but excellent guess

The hydraulic effect is much the same I think... but in this case from a dam spillway.

Thank you Trev, I think Mike is being a bit naughty Is this any better? Taken with a mobile but at least not a selfie.

PS. Well, my friend shot it with his camera , so I can't remember properly if it was a mobile phone .

    So what is it...?
