Run Softly, Carry a Big Stick

I'm often first, only because I started a day early. But that means I'll FINISH A DAY EARLY!!

    Day 21: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

Canon 500D, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, full EXIF, PAD slideshow.

Our Goldie loves to fetch split firewood, or large branches. If she can barely pick it up or drag it, it's a perfect stick for her.

Her eye looks a little wild from reflecting the fill flash: I did tone it down some in PP, but perhaps not enough.

C&C always appreciated. I just realized that I've omitted this statement sometimes, but believe me, I always appreciate suggestions, critiques, and pointers. If I ever forget to say this, please assume that I'm anxious to hear any thoughts that occur to you.

    Cheers,
    Rick

Why do dogs do that? I saw a dog last week struggling with half a tree. Lovely dog - send her across the pond if she's too much trouble for you!

    Infinite Care

    Day 21: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

This is the main painter guy at the workshop. He's a quiet, careful sort of guy who never hurries. He almost waltzes when painting, does a lovely, graceful two-step dance with the spray-gun hissing paint. That stuff you see in the air is the spray from the paint gun. It got hellish hard to breathe in there, so we retreated outside while he and the Boss worked.

    Ooh, look! Shiny!

    Day 21: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

The back end of the bus has never looked so good. Fresh paint, all glossy and clean. Probably won't be so clean again for a long time to come.

    Hi Kit,

It has been very interesting seeing your (mobile) home changing these last few days.

I hope you don't have green spotted canoes though

You'll have to take it somewhere picturesque (if possible, before it gets too dusty) and shoot it against a breathtaking backdrop.

    Cheers,

    Hi Rick,

    A nice shot of Goldie.

I have had this 'pet eye' problem before and rather than 'toning down', I have been known to zoom right in and paint over individual pixels (with some 'almost black') leaving just a typical catchlight shaped white spots for effect. A bit tedious, but the eyes aren't that big usually, so it doesn't take too long.

    Cheers,

I had a job shunting new trailers in and out of a paint shop, it was a very easy job and well paid but I'm allergic to paint. Don't think I would take a camera in there.

    Wow!

Nice Tour Bus, Kit! I had no idea you were a rock star as well! Been a little behind here and just saw it today! Plus the added bonus of a pair of kayaks on top, British Racing Green, that thing looks like it is going fast just sitting there! I'm going out and buying all your albums!

I have a little matching tag along car for you, but I'll have to post it elsewhere since I didn't shoot it today!

    Thanks, Dave, I'll try that.

So peaceful, Colin: a wonderful shot, beautiful colors. I didn't realize how big the rocks were until I viewed it full size and saw that those are human footprints.

    Re: Infinite Care

I like the first shot best, Kit. With the painter's right toe up in the air a bit, it gives a hint of that light-footedness you describe. Very nice image. I hope you had a UV filter over your lens with all that paint in the air.

    Cheers,
    Rick

That's stunning, Rob. The decreasing size of flowers going up the diagonal is great. The frame works very well with the image, too.

    Big Stick, Take 2

    Day 21: July 2010 Photo-a-Day Thread

I followed Dave's suggestion about working at the pixel level. I did red-eye first, just to get the colors in range, then painted as he suggested around the blown area so the reflective area was a more reasonable size. Then I used the burn tool to take the whole thing down to a more reasonable brightness, with stronger burn on some real blown spots, still leaving them a little higher, so as to show a specular reflection.

It's a pretty subtle change (good!), but I think she looks less wild-eyed and more natural than in my previous attempt. A good PP lesson.

    C&C most welcome.

    Cheers,
    Rick

    I agree Steve,

You certainly wouldn't want to change a lens in there and risk that getting that paint mist on the shutter or sensor

    Sheffield & Derby;
From Glasgow back south today to Sheffield and Derby, and homeward bound.

Passing through Olton, a district I normally do not seee much of, I find another bit of street architecture that intrigues.

This decorates the entrance to a local rail station.

Before the PAD challenge I'd noticed but not quite connected with the proliferation of this type of street decoration... so, one more for the archive and day 21 complete!

(Coudn't get online yesterday so have just posted the day 20 images)

Really? They're kind of a nice touch, I thought. That big empty space, someone was there, but now they're gone, leaving nothing but footprints*.

    Cheers,
    Rick
