Cannot find the right white balance

Hello all
Have just achieved a Nikon D90.

Since I have a lot to learn, I would like to ask if you could help me with adjusting the white balance on the D90?( actually I put it on "auto" but I would like to obtain a brown color for landscape and portrait indoors. Should I choose color temperature on my DSLR? Thank you

I have a feeling what you want may be a sepia effect on a monochrome picture, to make an image look 'old'.

You wouldn't normally achieve this via adjusting the camera's white balance, it is something you normally do in Post Processing (PP).

Do you have any PP software? Anything from say, Picasa upwards?

If I am wrong, can you provide an image, or a link to someone else's image, that shows us the effect you're after recreating?

I have Photoshop Elements 7 and I know how to obtain the Sepia color.I don't want to put it on a monochrome color but I will try otherwise and send some pictures after finishing.

There are a lot of things I can't find... but to answer your question... if you shoot in RAW it's not too important. Put the camera on auto WB and adjust (if you need to) in RAW edit. If you shoot in JPEG, consider shooting in RAW or switch the WB to suit the conditions.

Erika, you could monochrome in the D90 and add the sepia in post processing. If you're shooting JPEG I would use a program like Gimp myself (pretty similar to Photoshop). If you take a color JPEG you can convert it to monochrome with channels or simple desaturation. On top of that you can then add a sepia effect with e.g. Foundry in Gimp.

Hope I'm not being rude but have you read this sites tutorial on this subject? It's something I couldn't get my head around when I made the jump to digital (I'm a bit of a luddite!) And it's actually how I found this site. :)
