Hi Bill:
Thank you for this advice. It turns out that an incredible good Samaritan, who has some sympathy for my BIL's condition, has offered him the unlimited use of a Canon 7D, plus a wide-angle zoom and a nifty fifty lens. I put the two in touch with each other and now the BIL has received the kit and is being coached by one of his photographically knowledgeable friends. I am amazed at such generosity...
