    Fame of Salem

This is a replica of the schooner "Fame of Salem", in where else but at the docks of Salem MA. The real ship was a privateer that was built for the War of 1812, and was wrecked in the Bay of Fundy two years later.

The shot was taken with a Nikkor 24m f/3.5 PC-E (shift tilt) lens. It's a hand held shot, but the shift feature means that the image did not have to undergo distortion correction in PP.

Saves a lot of PP. Very nice shot. I love old wooden vessels even if they are replicas.

Lovely image Manfred, if I were to be nit picky, I would lose the one and a half people on the far left?

The high technical quality of the shot with it's wonderful detail is what stands out for me, and the sky! Nice work Manfred.

At one point I would have done that automatically, but recently when studying the work of well known photographers, I have discovered that they tend not to do this with the smaller details, so I've started doing that as a practice as well if the capture doesn't impact the final image that much.

I generally frame my images for print sizes (17" x 22") and know I will be throwing away bits of the left and / or right side of the image when I do the prep to make the actual print. These figures get lost during that process. I wasn't planning to hang this on a wall anywhere, so skipped this step, but here is the shot cropped to print format.

I agree with David here, but since your explanation, I still haven't changed my mind about it...the last shot, if not an edit is an improvement. I this last one better...

    Re: Fame of Salem

Manfred great shot, however I am having a problem, they say that this is the Fame of Salem. I say this because the rigging is all wrong, any info on the Salem states and shows a two-masted vessel with schooner rigging, this is a 3-masted vessel more like a fully-rigged ship, the hull looks more like that of a schooners'. So to me something is wrong here, I would say it is not you, but the info that was supplied to visitors as most would never know the difference. Great shot no matter how you look at it.

    Cheers: Allan

Nice photo for all the reasons already mentioned.

The sign on the walkway indicates that the ship is the Friendship of Salem, not the Fame of Salem. Photos of Friendship on the Internet match this photo.

Thanks Mike and Alan - I guess there was enough written about the Fame of Salem in the exhibits, I pulled off the the wrong name.

    Re: Fame of Salem

Thanks Mike, when I saw the word schooner and that rigging something said not right. As an ocean going vessel, 3-mastes and fully rigged would be right.

    Cheers: Allan

Fame or Friendship - it's a very nice portrait of a great looking ship!
