It's here I am a happy cowboy and the battery is charging

It took me a while to make up my mind but last week we hit the shutter and ordered the Sony Alpha a58.

Today it arrived and tonight I am just unpacking, testing how it feels and putting in the card and later the battery.

My first impression is 'Oh Wow'!

It feels solid, fits the hand nicely, makes very satisfying sounds when things are opened and closed and is quite an upgrade from my 4200.

Tomorrow if it doesn't rain I will try some garden shots and see how things work.

We now expect a corresponding rise in image quality, for as we all know, it's the camera that makes great images!!

I know this'll sound DUMB, but can you take a picture of the new camera with the old camera?

    Congrats!

Everyone at my wifes office knows that to be true! I actually am expecting a decline in quality for a while. One of the reasons I was able to capture what I did with the 4200 were the 15,000 or so shots I took. Eventually I came to understand the camera. Going to take me a while with the new one.

Editing in raw is also going to require a whole new bunch of skills.

This is my idea of fun in the sun.

I could make a long story short but that wouldn't be any fun at all.

I started believing that I wanted a superzoom. However Every time I tried to order one I was stymied. I have always found in my life that when things go hard it is usually because I am trying to open the wrong door.

I expanded my search and started to consider 4/3, advanced compact, and dslr. At one point I was directed to a good review on the Olympus 1s. It went into a lot of tech talk and showed the quality difference between different sized sensors.

I knew that if i was going to get a superzoom it would be one with a 1" sensor. Very expensive!

There was a suggestion made that a dslr with a 1" sensor could do nice macro and allow me many future possibilities. Still wasn't convinced.

Now here comes what may sound strange. I have been taught to accept and trained to be a part of the spirit world. About 3 weeks ago I started seeing a camera with an unusual shape in my dreams. A week or so ago I was looking at possibilities and when I pulled up the Sony it was the shape I had been seeing.

I called to Myra, showed her the camera explained how i knew it was the knew and she said yes so we.ordered it. It is not a dslr, nor a superzoom but it seems to be a well crafted camera for someone who thinks of himself as a generalist.

So say some to justify the expense of their gear, others know better.

A sharp chisel will cut wood as easily as it cuts flesh, which one you cut is up to you but don't blame the chisel.

It is a very happy time. The S4200 was my first digital camera and it amazed me at what it could do. The Sony may not have been a good teaching/first camera but it is a great camera to build upon the lessons the 4200 taught me.
