In #1 the building and, of course, its reflection provide a good strong line taking us into the frame. The river in #2 provides that, but, in my opinion, not as strongly.

I like the composition and framing of #1. There's interest in all parts of the frame. And although we have the reflection of the tower/fortress (?) coming to the bottom of teh frame in #2, I feel there's an awful lot of 'dead' space where there's nothing much happening so far as the water is concerned.

I see there is, I think, a bird on the walkway just in the sunlight in #2. I wonder if that would have been a much better location for this shot than the bridge which you are standing on.

That's one person's thoughts. There will be others no doubt. And remember, they are only my thoughts and can be dismissed as readily as they can be accepted.
Thanks Donald - your comments are very helpful and a reminder to me that good composition takes time. The second shot is essentially an opportunistic holiday snap where time was limited to get things right whereas the first was taken on a walk where I had all the necessary time to compose, bracket exposure etc.

Here is another on the reflections theme. This is a crop from an image that had some uninteresting space originally:

I know there are lots of technical problems, movement blur, terrible background etc. but I like it. It's a happy pic.

Looks like a 'warm air' (ducted heating) vent to me.

    Or, maybe (in Oz) cooling
