    Fishing boats at Aldeborough

On previous visits to this Suffolk port I tried in vain to capture the nature of the fishing boats beached in the local custom along with the usual bits and bobs. This recent one satisfied me most with a large expanse of sky to reinforce the sense of exposure to the elements on this beautiful but often storm beaten North Sea coast.

Interesting image, Neville. The light hitting the boats is nice and warm.

What I do wonder about is the sky; it's not particularly interesting, yet you devote the lion's share of the space to it. I'm not sure that this is really working all that well. Conclusion; I really like the bottom part of the image, the top part, not so much.

Beautiful image. I agree with Manfred, too much sky. IMO would rather see more of the beach.

It's a great shot Neville with all the detail you'd want in the boats and gear. As to the sky I reckon the clouds have some real potential. A bit of selective midtone and highlight contrast adjustment with a tweak to saturation and perhaps vibrance in just the sky would really lift I think. Nice shot.

Beautiful light and gorgeous colour (which is what colour photography should be about, I think).

I take a different view on that question of how much sky we see. I like it. I think it contributes to the sense of scale, of 'openness'.

Happy with the scene with the broad expanse of sky, Neville though I see that Manfred's comment is helpful too on another scale...

Like it as it is Neville - the blue pipes under the main feature boat link it to the blue boat and the red top line link it to the red 'crate' to the left of the blue boat, in all it ties them together nicely. The expanse of sky works for me - its a very flat open place with a big wide open feel to it - so it fits.

Thank you to all for the range of feedback on this one. It really does help. I suppose there is never just one correct way to handle a subject. Every interpreter of the scene likes to tell his or her own story through the composition.
