I think the reason for the difference is that the first series didn't need as much sharpening, there was nothing to correct.
Fair point John, there is much less need for sharpening in the initial series. But.... I noticed on the first series that the 'high frequency' elements of the image eg the shells and parts of the Millefiore were sharpened. The effect was nowhere near as strong as for the moon shots. It's this that is rather puzzling.

The only reason I can think of to explain the difference is that the moon comprises about 1/16 of the total frame, compared to the other sequence , which is 100%.

Has everyone been checking the resolution of the final output from this technique to see if the resolution has increased.

I found this action script for Photoshop

    http://www.cloudbait.com/science/shiftproc.html

The image is imported into Photoshop.
It is resampled by 2X or 4X.
The background layer is duplicated four times (for a total of five layers).
One of the new layers is marquee selected (control-A) and shifted one or more pixels.
This is repeated with each of the new layers, for up, down, left, and right.
The layers are displayed using the Darken option.
    The layers are flattened.
The image is resampled back to its original size.

Use this to check the megapixels of the saved image.

I have a copy of the book: Photographic Multishot Techniques by Juergen and Ranier Gulbins. The book addresses: Super Resolution (which is the subject of this thread, as well as: Focus Stacking, HDRI, and Pano Stitching as well as Increasing Micro Contrast.

    I found a pdf copy at: https://www.rockynook.com/samples/105/TOC.pdf

Richard, that link only provided the book index, do you have to purchase the entire copy?

Yes. Rockynook is the book's publisher, so they want your money. The chapter on this subject is little more than an intro to the Photoacute software and is probably the weakest section in the whole book. I bought it for the pano chapters.

Would I recommend the book; probably not. It came out in 2008 and needs a fairly major update.

Manfred, thanks for the information, I tried my local library which has an eBook nook, but no luck. I'm sure there are other sources available with more recent information.
