    Our Struggling Mangroves

Destruction of our mangroves here has again become the topic of much discussion with the government finally putting a hold on plans for development that will destroy any mangrove covered area. This is all very well but unfortunately they continue to totally overlook the far greater destruction being done by non-commercial activity.

Anyway, for some time I have wanted to capture the plight of the mangroves and their struggle to survive. This image shows some of the young shoots, mature ones, their environment and of course that mountain range you must get bored of seeing

Comments and suggestions welcome as always.

Beautiful shot Grahame. Some may say that you should crop either top or bottom (ya know, the rule-of-thirds enforcers) but, having explored both options I think it works best just the way you have it. Wall hanger, or computer wallpaper for sure.

Nice shot, Grahame...and no, I am not bored of that mountain range at all. Different view with the same mountain range is not really that noticeable. Hope you will be successful in your quest to help their survival...

Thanks Jack. I have also got versions that were shot with the horizon on top and bottom thirds but they do not work with this one without losing the mangrove and its shadow.

Hi Izzie, I was in the same area tonight shooting into a brilliant sun as it set and those mountains just to my right were totally obliterated by cloud and rain at the same time, amazing.

There's quite a few here fighting for their survival the problem is getting the people up top to notice.

I like the gentle colours in this and the forms defined partly by changes in colour and partly by differences in light and shade.

The shot is effective at showing the mangroves while providing nice sunset colors. To draw more attention to the mangroves it might help to bring out a little more detail. Awesome looking clouds. Not a fan of the white border.

Thanks for commenting Tony. It was the subtle colours that appealed to me with this one with just a bit of emphasis on the green.

It almost has a watercolour effect in parts, very appealing.

Dan, looking at the mangrove today in a well lit room I can see it could do with some more work on it so I'll give it a go later, I had only pulled the roots out of full shadow. This one was mainly PPd in ACR and I'm still learning with selective changes so the practice will be good.

It's tempting at times to try and pull out detail in clouds but I left these subtle to try and retain interest more on the foreground. As for the border, it comes with or without

Great composition. Lovely pastel colours. The change in texture from the tidal flats to the water and struggling mangrove shoots also works well. Nice one.
