    Yellowstone Colors Last Installment

These colors are rather subdued. The last half of October in Yellowstone the grasses are golden and the elk are hanging around the Madison River bottom. In these three photos I was trying the catch the subtle colors of late fall in the high mountains of Wyoming.

I like how the yellow colors are almost throughout these images, at least the first two. All are very nice. First is framed well as is, but as another option, I was wondering about a similar crop just if you moved it higher up, if there was any more to the top of the picture, because the su on the trees in the background is attractive. How close were you tho the elk? It looks like you were close here.

around Casper thats the color for most of the year. The grass pops with a little green in the spring but doesnt last long without any rain. Its wonderful that you were able to use this color to your advantage

The second and third images are very subtle, the first has more energy and the colors could have been emphasized a bit more.

Yes...beautiful colours and the light boosted it more on the yellowish side. I will try to make a trip next year for my bucket list. There is so much to photography in Wyoming. If not for the weather too cold for most the year, it would have been nice to live there. Very beautiful shots. I hope this is not the last of your photographic wonderment for us here down the other side of the country than yours. I really enjoyed your series. Looking forward to more.

Beautiful images. The last one would have looked awesome as a long exposure, though I like it as is, also.

Very nice set Chuck, I'm intrigued by the base of the tree trunks in the last image does the area flood thereby causing the whitening on the tree trunks or have they had the bark stripped by animals?

Peter, The dead trees have an interesting history that most people wouldn't guess. In Yellowstone the thermal areas are not static but move around. In this case a forest grew and then a thermal area shifted and caused the trees to die. The minerals from the thermal area were absorbed by the wood (perhaps capillary action) and caused the wood to become gray, and somewhat mineralized. Then the hot spot moved again and grasses were able to take over. This constant change around the thermal areas create some very interesting images.

I have attached an image of the same trees in the winter taken midday under mostly cloudy conditions. If you look at the upper right corner you will see living trees that weren't killed you the thermal shift. Thank you for your interest.
