    Some Wild Things

Once again I visited a near by game reserve. I recently got the Canon 100-400mm lens and this was the first time I really took it into the field and I must say it did not disappoint, amazing piece of glass and I recommend it to anyone who might be interested in wildlife photography.

Hope you enjoy, C&C always welcome.

A very nice set. I absolutely adore the Zebra image! Beautiful composition, gorgeous background and light!

I am also very fond of #8. Gorgeous detail. Regal beauty!

Awesome images! The only critique I would have is in #6 & #8, I would have liked to see more of the images on the top. The tiger's ears are cut off, as well as the horns in the other image. Just my thoughts, but perhaps you wanted them this way.

I hope in #2, the last one, that is not your camera!

Thanks Christina, the Zebras are my favourite as well. The moment was just right. With #8 do you meant the Stork or the Tiger?

    Thanks John

Thanks Carol, the cropping wasn't really by choice, the tigers for instance was shot through a fence and there was an annoying line right on that level, I tried removing it in post but it looked worse so I decided this was the better option. As for the buck, it was also being squeezed through a tiny gap in the bushes and there was a huge branch at annoying distance that was too far away from me to move around.

Ah and no the GoPro was not mine, it belonged to a guy who was busy playing with the cub when the cub decided it would rather play with the camera I think he got it back more or less in tackt though.

Terrific images for the most part. Everything comes together just perfectly in the image of the zebras.

In Flickr images #3, #9 and #6, consider trying something close to a square format.

Thanks for the explanation; you surely did a msterful job of getting around those obsticals, such great clarity on them!

LOL! Doubt I would want it back, after the cub had fun with it! That is a priceless image, you should give a copy to the poor guy.

    Re: Some Wild Things

    Thanks guy!

Mike I will definitely give that a try and see how they look.

Carol, I think the clarity is mainly owed to the lens, it is such an amazing piece of kit. I used to use a "cheap" Sigma 70-300 that I got when I just started out with photography but it is so soft compared to this lens, definitely worth the money.

The guide that was in the enclosure actually had to use a squirt bottle to get the lion to let go of the camera, it was rather funny to watch. I should have asked him for his details actually.

    Hi John,

My pleasure, and it was truly a pleasure to view your images. The tiger is my 2nd favourite.

The stork is beautifully photographed. I like the composition but I am not as fond of the shadows and the position of the bird.

I also love the image of what I think are Rhinocerous?

All of your images have gorgeous detail.

My vote goes to the last one...the cub with the camera...you should have taken shots of the guide using the squirt bottle...

All great shots. The Canon 100-400 is on my wish list. Great detail in all the images.

Great photos, but I thought tigers were native to Asia, not Africa.

    Re: Some Wild Things

Hi David, they are but because they are endangered a few organisations tried breeding them here in RSA and they seemed to adapt pretty well. These are all kept in separate enclosures and are fed so they aren't "wild" more like zoo tigers.

    Re: Some Wild Things

Nice series. Really excellent work with all indications of they're being in a game park well avoided in the images. Well done.
