Motorcycle Helmets for Regional Magazine Ad.

To celebrate their tenth year in operation, this bike shop is having every
month some items at special prices. For September, these two different
    types of helmet.

My luck is that the magazine will be printed on the 6th… the owners could
have thought of it earlier! — "…leave enough room around so they (the
magazine) can fit them in the ad." was the only requirement.

These helmets are much more sophisticated than the one I wore in the
glorious time where I was only driving my GL 1200!

I am still amazed by and jealous of the people here who can manage lighting like this. What is the surface that the helmets are sitting on?

Tony, Daniel (Kodiak) is an old hand in lighting and photography...it is his trade. As a hobbyist, I can't compete and leave it as that...

Anyway, the shots are excellent and has the drama/mood with the choice of lighting. I wasn't really thinking of the picture when I first looked at it but I was more interested in how Olivier or Benedict will look on those... and what they can cook up while your back is turned...

    Thanks John, Tony and Izzie.

As we were in the shop, Olivier did not like the chosen white helmets:
"…do you think I could have a black one to shoot for my portfolio?"

The owner gave him the choice and he picked one he liked:
"Dad, could you wait until tomorrow to shoot yours? I'd like to work on
mine right away…" Since this is a 30-45 minute session for the 2 helmets,
I agreed insisting the studio should be back in order when he's finished.

We got home at 18:00 and he went to bed at 21:45 frustrated and with a
very dry "Good night!" —I went to the studio to see his progress…
Well, I should take the time then to shoot mine… leaving the studio as
he left it. This morning, his mood is better but he doesn't seem to want
to rush back in the studio.

Anyway, my takes are ready to deliver so he can take the time he needs!
I remember how it was when I began…

So, it is past 12:00 and Olivier's shot is ready. It just couldn't be done without
a little (big) hand from you know who!

All three shots are quite nicely executed. I can see why Olivier was struggling a bit; the black helmet against a black background is definitely more challanging as he needs to add separation without lighting the background.

U assume that you are doing some of the lighting from the bottom, through a piece of translucent acrylic (Plexiglas) to get the hot-spot under the helmet?

Nicely done, I know symmetry is boring but wonder how that would look shot facing the camera? I think the design would make up for such a standard form.

Symmetry is a great design and composition technique that may be boring
when use at the wrong place or improper layout.

The client wanted a 45° view (unspoken but automatic) since it is the only way
to show both volume and design features, none correctly… but a bit of everything!

The black helmet would have been the right article to play with in the suggested
direction though. Olivier was too pissed off and I had little time to experiment.
I guess another occasion will show up.

Great images Kodiak, how did you manage to light inside the first helmet?

    Cheers David

They were all lit the same way… the 1st one had none of the stickers or other
attachements tied to the jaw strap.
    Thanks for the comment.
