    Baby's New Coat

Went to the east end of the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone NP to shoot some animals. The bison are getting ready for the rutt as the the bulls are grunting loudly. No head butting yet as they haven't gathered their harems yet but I'll be back to capture that. This is a bison calf whose fur is turning from baby red to a dark winter brown. Pentax K-5 + K 400mm f/5.6 MF lens.

good composition on 1 + 2, they all look a little soft to me, maybe its my monitor? buit viewing here the eyes are not sharp enough.

Thanks for commenting Mark. The first thing I check is the eye and I thought they looked sharp. I was using a 40 yr old lens and manual focus so it's likely my rusty MF skills.

Nice set Steve, great title as well. My eyes suggest that the first image is focussed right on the nose. As that is sharp but... the rest of the head is softer, could that be down to the f stop you used or were you hand holding.

Still I would be pleased to have seen the wee beastie. I will look forward to seeing more when the rut starts.

Your welcome steve and like i said it could be my monitor or even the uploading on to here thats softened them, equally it could be my 50 year old eyes! your uploads are quite small and it allows upto 1600 across the long edge on here, try that, it might help.

I made a 100% crop around the calf's eye. It's possible that the newer sensors are out resolving the older lenses. What do you think?

    Re: Baby's New Coat

It looks soft to me but i still think it might be the uploading, try doing it direct via tiny pix 1600 along the long edge yours has been scaled to 700 x 464, lets see what everybody else thinks

Ive added a couple of 100% crops one where ive missed the focus one where its closer, its not really much of a true test though because im shooting a 36mp camera, and im probably spoiled when it comes to detail. only you cant test your images for detail with the equipment you have by doing a test shot where you know you have achieved focus and comparing it with those youve posted.

    soft

    Baby's New Coat

    Not so soft.
