Going to shoot some concerts at a local festival , any tips for beginners?

Last year i shot some pictures at a local festival just for the practice of it. I have the oopportunity to do it again this Friday and Saterday.

I got access behind the fence , but the stage is a little high.

I don`t shoot much concert but i like to try things and experiment. Last year i used my Nikon D800 and changed between 70 - 200 vr f2.8 and Nikon 24-70 f2.8. The last day i Used my old D90 with the 24-70.

The way i did it was i shot aperture mode, used f2.8 - f3.2 and used iso and exposure comp to try and get it right. I also used spot metering, not matrix. I used the focus point and spot metering on the artists face.

I used aperture mode because they have the three song rule, so there is not so much time experimenting.

If people have any other good advice i can try out i would love to hear it and get some general tips, is my starting settings wrong ? Should i change any settings?
When it comes to settings whats the shortest exposure time i should allow before I adjust the iso up. (hanheld shot)

Here are some of the shots from the festival last year: http://www.teigen.be/blogg/?p=5556 this is from the first day.

This is from the second day this day i also had the d90 with me:http://www.teigen.be/blogg/?p=5598

(i have more pictures of the concerts, but it was some strict rules that only the pictures my local newspaper published was allowed to use on my blogg)

I did take pictures of the life at the festival and the people also.

Her is from the last day: http://www.teigen.be/blogg/?p=5514

Here is some shots from a indoor concert with a pink floyd cover band: http://www.teigen.be/blogg/?p=6331

Hope someone will take the time to give me advice on the settings and what i could do better this year.

Safety: be careful of lightning, thrown objects, jostling fans, and theft. Have a good time.

A pro once told me to set up to shoot on manual for concerts. The lights at a concert can change so quickly that an shooting aperture priority or shutter priority can result in more blown shots than shooting manual. High ISO, high shutter speed and wide open aperture.

With a bit of luck, I'll get a chance to try his advice next weekend...

I locked it in Manual used 1/250th sec f2.8 - f.3.2 and adjusted the iso to get it right. Also used spot not matrix, and focus point on the face.
