    The final colored photo

    I've completed draft one of the black and white photo I was colorizing and I'm pleased with the results. Naturally, it's not perfect and I may have some colors wrong, but I call it creative license .

    I started off with a pure black and white image which, to me, made it too perfect. So, I added a slight color cast in the warm spectrum to give the photo some age. Coloring the ground was easier than I thought and I was delighted with the result of it. The trees and sky were a little more difficult and I was busy keeping them apart so they didn't clash. I did use the sky color to darken the distant forest on the right, which worked well.

    Hi Jim

    What I found interesting about your technique is that you use soft light for your entire blending layers.

    Also, credit to you for colouring the entire portrait with a brick (aka optical mouse - in one of your video clips). If there ever be a competition for hand held sharp shooting below 1/60, My money would be on you.

    Cheers

    Very very good and I am not going to argue about anything with you holding the creative license trump card.

    Indeed, I was worried about the patience factor as well. It took me a week of working on it off and on. Ironically, I got the ground, sky and trees done all in one night. Dean, this image I posted here, was done with my tablet. It's the first one I did with one. All my previous ones were with a brick.

    Thank you everyone!

    Great job. It looks like an illustration out of an old book...

    The finished photo is excellent Jim,but as I told you before I also liked the image when you posted it unfinished on the half way.I know that this is a project for you but you might as well try partially coloured ones in the future

    Very, very well done Jim!

    I'm going to have to buckle down and figure out this technique. I have a few images in some old family albums that are asking for this treatment. I suspect I have the patience for this type of work, but right now, I just don't have the time.

    I don't have a great deal of time either. Just break it down into small jobs. Watch my tutorial in one of the other threads in this forum.

    This one is for you;
    I removed the color cast, added some sharpness (maybe a bit too much), and adjusted the contrast.

    I had bookmarked it, but just haven't gotten around to watching more than the first bit. I've got to make the time one of these days...

    I'm curious about what you mean about using soft light. Is this unusual for this type of editing?
