Photo Competition for October - THE RESULT

There hasn't been such a battle for the top spot for a long time. The lead kept changing 2 or 3 times every day. It was so close all the way. Great stuff.

    So ...............................

    In 3rd place

    Me (Donald)

    with

Photo Competition for October - THE RESULT

    In 2nd place

    Joe (jprzybyla)

    with

Photo Competition for October - THE RESULT

    And is 1st place is

    Trevor (tbob)

    with

Photo Competition for October - THE RESULT

The closest chasers, charging up behind these 3, were entry numbers 5, 18 and 29.

All of the winning photographers as well as many others that didn't place certainly deserve the recognition. There were so many wonderful images submitted last month that viewing the collection is a special pleasure.

    WOW!!!
The standard of CiC members work has improved enormously over the last 12 months since I was last here, any of these 3 would have easily won a comp 12 months ago - they are all stunning in their own way!

As a salmon fisherman Donald's leaping salmon really touches a chord with me - if only you could see its face. Knowing how difficult it can be to get such an image in the first place I am lost in admiration as it is.
    Did you use flash Donald?

    No. No flash. Was shooting at 6 frames per second, Canon 40D, 24-70mm f/2.8L @ 28mm. ISO1600. 1/1500s@f4.

I'm pleased with it, but it's not THE shot that that I want. I know exactly what it looks like and it does include having the full face in view. Will try again next October!

You can read the story about me falling over a salmon and smashing my thumbnail, here.

I used to Ghillie on the Spey but we didn't have locations like this, I believe there is something similar up around Inverness - the name escapes me at this moment.
I can't believe a big, tough guy like you was startled by a little fishy Donald - maybe the fall was due to a little too much 'water of life' while the hours passed ;-)

I know the dam Pitlochry gets quite full of salmon in October, the poor creatures miss the fish ladder, get through the screens and end up in the dam itself. It can be a hive of jumping salmon but it doesn't make for good photography.
After seeing hundreds of salmon their magic still hasn't worn off, I still get a tingle of excitment when I see one and remember their life story and the miles they have travelled.

I look forward to seeing next years attempts Donald.

Congratulations Trevor, Joe, Donald. All wonderful images in their own way.

This last comp was a really really difficult one to pick just one. Even picking the top 10 was a chore let alone just one.

Quite amazing to have taken first given the quality of the competition. The entries were universally quite excellent.

This shot was one of those instances where it very easily could not have happened. I went into work early to take care of a patient that wasn't doing well. I felt I had to get away for a few minutes to get rid of some stress and realign my thoughts. So I drove down the road and set up. I never expected things would go as well as they did. So I got two benefits. A good shot and a some distance to put things in perspective.

Well done. I do have to say that picking one out of the offerings is getting harder each and every month.
