Buffalo in a South African National Park

These two photos were made toward the end of the day in Addo Elephant National Park. The buffalo shown here are part of a herd of about 80 to 90 buffalo. It seemed that none of them knew that just a bit up the hill, disguised perfectly in the colors of the brown grass, a lioness was closely watching the herd, probably waiting until after dark to prey on one of the calves or a weak buffalo.

I really like the separation you got from the rest of the herd for the DOF for the one closer to you. It really makes that shot. How exciting to get to make that trip.

Thank you, Terri. Having the opportunity to see, smell and hear everything when in the middle of 80 or so buffalo is an experience that I will never forget. We were running out of time to get outside the park gates before they closed and had to drive literally through the middle of the herd as it crossed the road.
