    Family:
    Libellulidae (Skimmers & relatives)

    Species:
    Risiophlebia dohrni (Kruger, 1902)

    Common Name:
    Potbellied Elf

    Location:
    Nee Soon Swamp Forest

This small dragonfly (Body length 24-25 mm) is very rare and localised. Confined to Nee Soon Swamp Forest, it can be found in shaded pools with sluggish or still water. In the Singapore Red Date Book, it is listed as endangered.

The thorax and abdomen are dark metallic with yellow markings. The eyes are reddish brown on top, pale yellowish white with pale dark areas below. Abdominal segments 1-3 are distinctively greatly swollen while the rest are thin and curved when viewed from the side.

Males and females are similar but the abdominal base of the female is less swollen.

What I like about this forum is that you learn more than just about photography. Nice shots Walad. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Walad,

I'm just learning about British species of dragon/damsel flies from a book - if you know a bit about them, can you confirm my observation (on your second shot) that is the female clinging to the leaf please?

I really haven't understood how the mating bit works

In fact now I think some more - surely it must be the male on the leaf?

    Thanks,

Nice images. I noticed the body and head are sharp but the wings are soft, something you might try is to use f16. When I capture dragonflies and damselflies it is what I need to get both the body and wings showing sharp detail.
