    Mini Competition #46

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forum.

    Blue Beauty

She is my favorite on in my childhood days.. We used to chase them. There are yellow ones which are easy ones to catch. The blue ones are less in numbers and are fast moving. They glow in the sunlight with the black stripes giving a perfect design !

    Alternative Christmas Tree

From last Christmas. A bit tricky to photograph because there was a fresh breeze moving the boat around and the only suitable angle was by placing my tripod on a floating pontoon. So getting a successful shutter speed meant my ISO was higher than I would have liked, while the aperture was almost wide open.

And that wind was so cold I had to adjourn to the nearest pub for a warm up!

    Re: Dwarfed

    Hi Ben,

While I liked your composition in Dwarfed a lot, I wasn't convinced about the white balance.

I hope you don't mind a little reworking (actually quite clumsily done in places).

    a) I did a WB on the sunlit white part of the "ONE WAY" sign
    b) It then became apparent that the red sensor was well into clipping leaving a nasty cyan on the fan hoods, so I desaturated those.
    c) LCE with USM 15%, 40px. 2
    d) Sharpen with USM 65%, 0.3px, 2

It might now stand a little saturation increase, but I haven't done that as it only struck me after uploading.

    Any better?

I like the use of the isolated desaturation! Kudo's on getting the color cast out of the one way sign! How did you access white balance for a JPEG? I thought that was an exclusive function in RAW processing! Concerning the brick wall, I'm not sure if there's anyway to totally eliminate the green cast left by the faulty color banding( I will explain shortly).

Here's the original! I like to shoot at night, occasionally, on the streets in our downtown area and around my neighborhood. unfortunately the ambient light isn't very forgiving! Sodium vapor street lights! As far as I know, because of gaps in the color band, sodium vapor lights have a negligible response to white balance. I was reasonably happy with the alterations originally made. The bricks lent themselves, because of their color, I assume, to a passable adjustment in Photoshop. Image> Adjust>Selective Color. I've never had much luck with getting the yellow green cast out these kind of shot's.

I would love to know; do you have the same streetlights in Windsor? And lastly, what does the acronym LCE stands for?
