    Eastern State Penitentiary - Photography

I traveled to Philadelphia, PA this past week to see the Phillies play and mark a stadium off of my list. While there I wanted to check out ESP and take a few pictures, luckily, it was not that busy. and of course, i had to grab a cheesesteak...

    a little history:
Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers.
Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.
Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.

All images were taking with OMD and prime lenses, processed in LR4 converted to b&w with VSOC using mostly Fuji Neopan 1600 to get the feel i was looking for.

Yes I did. Excellent use of B&W and lighting. The sombre subject matter demands nothing less. Comparing #9 and #10 illustrates this point far more eloquently than mere words from me. Very nice captures.

A very appealing set. You had a great day at the penitentiary.

Considering that I'm a Nationals fan and that the Nats and Phillies are in the same division, I hope the home team lost at your baseball outing.

Brian - thanks for sharing these! I had to get my husband to come look through your slideshow with me. That's the kind of place we love to visit - it's now on our list!

And I agree - the photos definitely look great in B&W. Very nice.

First off, thank you for you comments..

second, yes the phillies lost. I am actually a long time O's fan. My future sister in law dates the phillies, now bench coach. so i see alot of phillies games throughout the season.

Brian - very nice set. I love the treatment. The B&W is just what this subject needs.

I like #1 and #7 best. I think I'd crop #1 just a tiny bit tighter - just enough to lose the white column on the right side.

This place is now officially on my visit list - thanks!

    Well done.

Nice work Brian. You captured the feeling of ESP very well. Being from Philly I know this place very well. Try to get back to town around Halloween to visit during their Halloween tour. It will scare the xxxx out of you.
