things I don't understand about photography

    1) The Whole CaNikon thing. You bought a Canon I bought a Nikon (or vice versa) get over it!

    2) You've bought a brand new dSLR and you either have no lens hood OR you're shooting with the hood reversed on the lens.....

    3) you've bought an entry level CaNikon and you've bought the battery grip. Now whereas I get it for shooting wildlife for taking scenic pics at a National Trust property?

    4) You're walking around Rome it's brilliant sunshine and you are using a flash to take pictures outside?? and you don't need fill flash to take a picture of the forum or St Peter's

no doubt someone will tell me why I am wrong.....

Well - frankly - everyone knows that Canon make the superior product - but - you have to ensure the images are shot with a prime lens attached (not a zoom) - and that lens DOESN'T have a UV filter attached (they degrade the image quality horribly) - and of course (most important of all), it has to be processed on a Mac (and not a Mac running Windows either) (because the colour will be so much better on a Mac). Oh - and don't shoot above 100 ISO either, or noise ruins the shot.

    Did I miss anything?

Colin gives the pretence of being very, very knowledgeable on these matters, but what he misses out reveals his inexperience.

You must, of course, ALWAYS be using a lens hood ....... Or is that you should NEVER be using a lens hood? I can never remember! But I seem to manage.

A CaNikon user can never appear in a photograph holding a NiCanon or CaNikon will sue them for everything they own, and visa versa.

    1) We're not like that here at CiC (thank heavens)
    2) I agree; if you got one, use it, it can only help
    3) It probably won't fit anyway
    4) I agree, although this one is more the domain of a P&S left in the wrong scene mode, but then I haven't been to Rome in 30 years, so who am I to say

    Cheers,

Because I bought a particular camera it absolutely has to be the best solution for every instance when someone post a "what should I buy" topic.

Never take a picture at mid-day.

Disregard all automation and only use manual mode.

You can't use the original strap, you must go out and spend a fortune on something more complicated.

    Technicalities come before artistic merit.

    And the point is???

Never take a picture at mid-day.
aka never handle expensive equipment after you've had a coupe of pints

Disregard all automation and only use manual mode.
It is after all one of the few things one can control in life.

You can't use the original strap, you must go out and spend a fortune on something more complicated.
Using the original strap is simpler than printing up a sign that says "Rob me, my camera is worth thousands"

    Technicalities come before artistic merit.
    And the point is???

I'll probably be sued for interjecting an absolutely serious note into the thread, but that's okay because I have lots of insurance.

I bought a battery grip for my first entry-level DSLR, am not a wildlife or sports shooter, and still today I always use the grip. It's not the extra battery power that matters to me; it's that the grip allows me to shoot in the vertical orientation while keeping my hands, arms and the rest of my body in the same position as when I'm shooting in the horizontal orientation.

More mass makes for better stability too. I'm another big fan of them.

And that's exactly why I got one for my 40D as well. That and the fact that it also allowed me to fit the hand strap instead of having a neck strap, which I hate.

It wasn't until Colin and Pops Carter (who was a member on here) were discussing still having the shutter front and top on their full-frame cameras that I learnt that a battery grip gives you the same for the crop factor cameras. I bought one immediately, without knowing it was supposed to be a bit 'naffe' to have one fitted.

Good thing this thread is tongue-in-cheek, because that made me twitch.

One thing we've missed is that you can't take good pictures without a full-frame camera and L-series glass.

You've got tonnes of money - nothing to do. Photography fits the bill.
What you do is - buy the top of the line equipment and partake in the endless flame wars on other threads.
Now you have loads of activities to partake in. Taking pictures not necessary.

Re: things I don't understand about photography

I kind of get the battery grip thing (rotating it) I just have never seen anyone use one in that way - or the type of person I'm referring to. Donald I don't regard it as naff I just find it strange when the lens is always an 18-55 sans hood and I've never seen it rotated.

I did like the B&W and full frame comment.....

and I'm pleased no one is taking this seriously......

and Colin the thing I've never understood is the person who buys an L series lens (well I've never understood anyone buying Canon ) and buying the cheapest UV filter they can buy......
