Green Heron (although happy to be corrected).
I saw some egrets (later post) in the same area and was pleasantly surprised by this one. Shame he only stayed for a couple of minutes - this is the only shot I got, and the iron was hot.
Such a pretty bird, love the colours. One of my favourite types (namesake aside).

Nice image, I like the composition showing the environment. I would say that is a Tri-colored Heron in breeding plumage. Good work Graham.

    Thanks Joe,
Good to know. Tri-coloured Heron, possibly my first.

You really have to bring it up in Lightbox to fully appreciate. Very nice!

Beautiful shot. Love the rule of thirds with this composition as it does show the bird in its environment and the greener grass adds some colour to the picture. It would be good to see a separate version with a tighter crop just to see this beauty up close. It has very nice colours.

    Thanks all,
I wish I could take credit for this shot, but it was actually a quick grab shot just in case the critter took of (which it did after this single shot). No thought went into composition, purely happenstance.

As per request Wayne, a closer look. About as close as I can get cropping in from the original.
