    Croatian Architecture: Monochromes

There is something about Croatian architecture that works so well with monochromes toned to resemble 18th century albumen prints. I just loved converting these photos.

Some of these photos were originally color slides. Others were captured on a point-and-shoot camera. All were taken in 2006.

C&C is encouraged, though I don't have anything to ask.

From within a strong set of architectural images, I think this is particularly impressive. I think it's beautiful composition with the lines working superbly well to take the viewer into the scene. I also think the whole set demonstrates excellent management of perspective.

Thank you, Donald. Ironically, I came very close to accidentally leaving out your favorite.

    Great set, Mike

Ditto Donald's remarks. I love the toning, and I love the use of contrast. This set is a great example of why we dont need to pull every bit of detail out of every dark corner and shadow.

    Great series Mike,

I can't decide on a favourite from a technical standpoint, but I do like views, so #7, I think.

    Excellent series, Mike. Favorites are:
#1 - Probably my favorite one. Key things which I like are the various angles, lines, and textures which either converge or remain parallel, which offers the eyes a lot of exploratory options. I'm a sucker for photos with a little mystery, and this has 3 - the stairwell, and the 2 tunnels below. I might like this photo better with the just the very last bit of the top/opening of the stairwell cropped off, but I'm not sure.
#7 - A real stunner which grabs my attention and makes me examine it over and over. Has a dreamlike mood for me, too.

    Hi Mike,
These are my favourite type of pictures. No one favourite from me; I like them all.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Cheers

Thanks, guys! Glad to see such a great reaction to this series. Converting them made me want to buy a couple airplane tickets and return to Croatia.

Interestingly, I have a black-and-white version of almost all of the above toned versions. I expected my wife to prefer them, but she liked the toned versions better.
