    I am not a great fan of lens flare shots but, I think that I can see what attracted you to this image.

    As a different approach to the same kind of cacti (I think they are the same, botany is not one of my best subjects), side lighting will also illuminate the spines..

    Yes, I do like the way the light has illuminated the spines. Very nice.

    I suggest a more effective approach to show the cacti would be a close-up view. This would help eliminate distracting elements. Using back lighting or side lighting, as rpcrowe suggested, would reveal the sharp spines nicely. The end of cacti branches (?) often have beautiful geometric patterns.

    I looks like you had a beautiful, Arizona desert day. (I'm envious)
