    From Florence - part 6 - Shadows

I don't know why but I always found shadows fascinating.

It's probably the simpicity of the form, they give you the outline but your imagination needs to do the rest subconsciously, to fill the details and create its own image.

#15 was taken from the very top of the Duomo. What you see is the shadow of the dome under the morning sun.

In #16 you see Palazzo Vecchio. Well at least you can imagine it since you only see the shadow of the tower on a nearby building. The buildings were heavily distorted as the shot was taken with a wide angle from their base. I tried to fix the tilt in Photoshop but still the lines are not perfectly straight.

    Thanks for viewing my images.

The whole set can be found in my site

    Part 1 - The River
    Part 2 - The Duomo
    Part 3 - Love Padlocks
    Part 4 - The Haze
    Part 5 - Pigeons
    Part 7 - Abstracts
    Part 8 - Black&Whites

The shadow in the first of these (#15) creates a wonderful sense of scale. You get the very clear sense of a huge structure towering over the houses below. Wonderful idea, very well executed.

I am jealous of you living in the most beautiful place in the world Nicola! Of course Greece is a wonderful country too but Toscana is like being inside a painting.

I constantly use the "Shadows and highlights" tool in Photoshop. I can't explain why such a usesful option is hidden, almost lost under the menus but you can do so much with it!

There was however enough diffused light for a fairly even exposure all over the frame but still had to tweak everything both in lightroom and photoshop.

    Thanks for the comment Donald.

When I saw the scene I knew I had to do my best to take a good shot.

I'm glad you like my country, anyway I think you are too kind.. there is a lot of beautiful places in the world, it's hard to make a ranking...
I've been in Greece when I was a child, so I've few and not clear memories. I planned a 3weeks tour in the Greek islands last juin, but at the end I couldn't go. I hope next spring will be the right time!

the "S&H" tool is as useful as hidden indeed!

I really like the shadow in #15 exactly for the reasons mentioned by Donald. I don't know if it was luck or intentional timing that the wind is blowing the steam from the chimney toward the top of the shadow, but it works as a great leading line.

Actually it was both Mike. I took five shots within about 5-10 minutes while observing the smoke so I could decide on that later.
