Photo Challenge for October 2009

Hi Folks,

The moment you've all been waiting for ...

... so let's get it underway!

Rules of Engagement:

1. Image must have been taken this month (October) (or thereabouts) eg if you took a shot towards the end of last month, but didn't have time to enter it in last month's competition, then that's fine :) (I just want to encourage people to "get out and get shooting", and not to just submit historic work).

2. Enter as many images as you like, but only 1 per post please :)

3. No theme

Hi Antonio,

I want the challenge to be open to all people, who shoot all styles. I feel that if we restrict it to a particular theme then that will eliminate a number of people :(

Everyone is welcome to choose their own personal theme though :)

You could always subcatagorize the winning posts: like #1,2 and 3 portrait, #1,2 and 3 animal, #1,2 and 3 landscape etc. :)

I like the idea of a contest with a theme. Maybe keep it in the new little contest, but therefore I see it as an opertunity for some people the have a greater chance on the victory if there's a theme which fits them well.

Ive got loads of photos from the air show last week. But will set my self the challenge of submitting one I take this month. This is for two reasons one to see if I can improve and the other to get me to go out and do something.

For a number of reasons, I'm unlikely to have much time for photography over the next few weeks *sob*, so I'll enter with a couple of very different shots which were both taken on Sept 30th.

I met a woman who raises Alpacas and got to see them a few weeks ago. They are very appealing animals.

A white border is exactly what I would have chosen but hadn't got around to, so I'm going to change the image to just that.

It _would_ have had perfect symmetry .... but this was the first shot I took and as soon as I realised I needed to move a little, people started walking into the main part of the shot. 15 minutes later I was cold, getting irritated (patience isn't my strong point ;)) and had a grumpy, bored, husband saying he wanted to move on :(

I'll try for perfect symmetry next time I visit!

Gill I dared to play with your image for a while. Please, if you want I will erase this post as you let me know in private for example.

I explain what I have done.
But before let me tell you that your image reminds me England with it's misty weather and cold. :)
First I have made a small barrel distortion under lens correction in CS as it increases the sense of perspective.
I have drawn two lines in red. One vertical and another one horizontal. OK you can see that :)
I have observed that the lamp is not exactly - exactly - at the center of the composition, aligned with what seems to be the door at the end, far away there.
May be - just may be - the lamp is not in the middle. I mean physically, on location.

On the other side, I think you should consider to shoot horizontally just to see what you get.
What doesn't please me very much in your image - in spite of considering an excellent image - is the fact that it is too vertically symmetrical.
You have the horizon at the middle of the picture. I don't know if balancing the crop up or down wouldn't make it better. More "ground" less sky or vice-versa.
The sky is so dramatic and menacing that I tend to suggest that you move to more "ground".

And, last suggestion but not the least, why not some person on the image ?
Well, if you don't want any person on it it is your option.
But, if there are people around moving, shoot 4, 5, 6 pictures and erase them on their layers.
I assume you are working with a tripod.

Poor me, I lost mine one of these days. I left it somewhere and I suppose it was on the street. :mad::mad:

Why not one person towards us blurred, expressing movement, at 2/3 of the frame. ?
Or even... a doll laying on the ground. Yes a doll. I know what a doll is. :D An old one.
To add drama to the scene.

Oh well, just letting my conscious flow for a while based on your image.

I wonder if, for the purposes of trying to keep this thread for monthly challenge entries (just for fun though it is), we should make comments and offer advice on images in seperate threads or via PMs? It's just that the thread gets very long by the end of the month if we all pitch in with C & Cs.
