An Alien sighting....
Was getting ready to go take pictures of deer and all I had with me was my 250mm zoom lens. I wish I had my 17mm to 85mm with me. Either way, I made the best of it and took this cicada shedding that was on an oak tree. Tossed it on my 12 year old son and would have needed a video camera to best record his reaction.

Excellent record of a bit of natural history which most people never see.

Re: An Alien sighting....
When I was a kid I spent the better part of two hours watching a cicada nymph climb a few feet up a tree and transform into an adult. I watched the adult emerge from the nymph's shed skin, its nubby wings growing long and clear, and its body gradually hardening. It finally found the strength to fly, but it didn't get more than 10 feet before a catbird swooped down and snatched it out of midair. The catbird then followed me all the way home; I guess it figured I had tossed this juicy morsel of food its way and was hoping I'd produce another. I felt really bad for the cicada: all that work for nothing.
