Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
First a question ...
You say "50D" in the thread title and "XTi" in the body of the post - which is it? (BIG difference between them).

Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
Hi Jack,
Doesn't "jive" the XTi (is also known as a 400D) (an entry-level model superceeded by the 450D which was inturn superceeded by the 500D), whereas the 50D is the latest pro-sumer grade camera.
Vastly different cameras I'm afraid :(
Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
yup, sounds like a scam. anyway, I'm tossed between 50D and the D80, soooo lets take it from there. What can you tell me about Canon, Colin, aside from capturing award winning images...;-)
Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
What are you shooting with at the moment?
Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
:)I have a Kodak z1012IS. It's a 10 mp, no raw, just jpeg prosumer.
I like to shoot unique landscape and cityscapes, bridges, boats, old earth moving equipment and nature. Also I love nightscapes. My equip. will consist of camera body and lenses, seeing as the kodak won't be interchangable.:)
It's late, see you in the morning......:)
Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
the 50d is hands down a better camera than the D80....if u can afford the 50D then get it...or even a 40D would be better than a D80....go to a reputable web site like adorama or BH Photo and compare the stats....my rebelXTI is better than the D80 IMO...:):):):):)
Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
I would recommend that you go down to your local Best Buy or camera store and physical hold the camera bodies that you're considering. If you have big hands, you may want to lean towards Canons since Nikon are physically smaller (but vertical battery grips will give you more hand surface and power).
The Canon mid-range cameras are the 50D/40D, Nikon's equivalent are the D300 and D90. Canon is currently running a instant rebate sale on their lenses. One of my favorite combo with the 40/50D is the 24-105 f4L IS USM; a great all around walk about zoom. But since you're more into landscapes, suggest the 17-40 f4L to start with (also another favorite WAL).

Nikon D40 Best, easy to use with many features. The $ you save you can purchase a GREAT NIKON lens.
$449.00

Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
If you can truly afford a 50D, I'd compare it with a D90, not the D80. The D80 is a fine camera, but if you're buying today and can afford it, look past it to the D90. For me (was just experiencing this yesterday while shooting with both cameras), the D90's cleaner high ISO performance is indispensable. The 50D is a notch above (more on this below) than the D90 in many respects, but low noise performance isn't one of them from the research I've done. It appears that Canon pushed a little too hard, too fast up to 15mp and that led to some compromises. Some even claim the 40D is preferable if clean high ISO images is what you're after.
When comparing Nikon and Canon offerings, keep in mind that these two competitors avoid direct competition by step-laddering their models. The ladder (before all of Nikon's latest model releases) seems to go like this: D40->D40x/D60->Xsi/Xti->D80/D90->40D/50D->D200/D300->... and above that I stop because I get a nose bleed. ;) Nikon has muddled this a bit with the release of the D5000, which appears to fall somewhere between the D60 and the D90 (perhaps head-to-head now with the Xti) and the D3000, which is really nothing more than a bells-and-whistle update to the D60.
To finish out what has turned out into a dissertation, do your research and pick according to your needs and budget. You really can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon: they both produce great cameras and lenses. I went with Nikon for their flash system... which curiously enough I haven't fully explored yet.
Re: pros and cons of a D80 and 50D
Thank you for the reply, I am very pleased with my Nikon D40 and SB 400 flash as it works very well for me. It is small and easy to carry and easy to use. It is time to take photos and stop trying to keep up with these manufacturers of lenses and cameras as after a while like you say can almost give you a nose bleed to keep up with them.
