I can never fathom the fine art or collectables market when objects get to these levels of value. I suppose the value must be whatever someone is willing to pay but I can never divorce myself from thinking that at some point the price goes from the sublime to the ridiculous. It must be a matter of bragging rights. The psychology eludes me.

I think it's all relative to ones disposable income. A friend of mine sells art to the "higher end" of the market and said folks will come in with $80,000 spare cash and try to decide "shall I buy art or shall I buy a new BMW". Literally.

Yep, and the reasonable choice should be art. Because it's an investment. Where new BMW is a waste of money. Somebody invested $2000000 (or whatever) in that Leica hoping that in not so distant future it will cost $3000000. It's not unreasonable at all.

Hmm; maybe you should convince them to buy your art.

Time and experience has shown me that my attitude is probably the less realistic as great art and rare items invariably accrue value. I guess it is just that I am too risk averse. Also I am too ignorant of what items are perceived by as valuable to jump into this sort of game.
