I think the lighting in your processed version looks good. Ideally I'd like to see all of little girl's figers, and possibly the baby's as well but in this case I think it's a minor point. Id suggest a portrait crop, brightening of the girl's eyes, and I'd also have a look in sepia and B&W to see how it looks in those finishes as well.
Colin, I will try your suggestions. Can you educate me on what a "portrait crop" is? Is it a specific aspect ratio? Thanks so much. -john

What Colin is meaning is to crop so it is as if you took it with the camera in portrait position; i.e. turned on its side, so that the longer edges of the image are at the sides instead of at the top and bottom.
In other words - lose a lot of the chair at the sides.
