Extreme crop but what do you think?

I saw a nice pic of Radu's and although I don't like to copy things thought it was so good I would like to try something similar.

Unfortunately this mean't an extreme crop and I don't know if the quality or resolution matters in this sort of thing but I suspect it does.

Does it work, does the resolution matter

It has an artistic, almost painting like feel to it. But I do think you loose to much detail if you look closely at the faces of the people that you can see in the photo.

Mal, I think you answered it already, but if it was your family, I would think you would want the feet left in the picture too.

I've done that on some desert scenes, but was never really happy with them.

For me, Steve, the guy on the right has to go. Which going with what we have here, would probably mean ending up with a square crop.

However, if this is already a crop I would like to return to the original and have another think about the options.

And with regard to the loss of detail. I just wonder if this is one of those occasions where some form of 'digital painting' might work.

I'm not normally a fan of these auto painting conversions but sometimes they can 'save the day'.

Cheers Bob and Mal, and for Geoff this is close to the original at 320mm equiv.

I do not know who the girl is.

    Nice pic overall.

Forgive my ignorance but who/what is Radu?

Radu has a thread where he captures photos of Romania and some other scenes from Europe. It's a single thread that has a lot of interesting photos of landscapes and architecture.

I think he's letting that one go at the moment focussing on capturing some photos of a protest that seems to have been on since Christmas in the People and Portraiture forum.

When faced with that scene, Steve, my first response would be to crop like this to retain the train essentials but concentrating more on the platform family.

Extreme crop but what do you think?

    Or to crop in tighter

Extreme crop but what do you think?

As an alternative with a different aspect

Extreme crop but what do you think?

Not a lot of fine details to work with from that low resolution image; it would work better with the original.

Cheers Geoff, a bit like this but without Orton. Just wanted an idea, and maybe some motion is needed

Extreme crop but what do you think?

Tried to upload the original RAW as a PNG 16 bit but it is a bit big.

    So I went via fotki

I originally tried a crop similar to your last example, Steve, but rejected it in favour of a 5 x 4 ratio in order to have just a little bit more 'height' to the engine smoke.
