    A Weekend In Melbourne

Mal and I travelled down to my home town of Mornington in Victoria, for the weekend. We managed to get quite a lot of time in taking photos The one place I definitely wanted to go to was Mills Beach where my family had a Beach House growing up. 'Beach House' is probably an over statement, LOL, they are really only beach shacks that you keep all of your swimming gear in, however one of these little 'sheds' will still set you back between $57,000 and $199,000AUD. I'm content with just taking photos of them.

This is what the beach is like that I grew up, no waves, no surfers, just lazy days on your boat.

    Would love thoughts and feedback!

Both have GOT to be viewed in the lightroom.

On the beach huts shot, I an overwhelming urge to want to slightly rotate it counter-clockwise. Does it need it or is some sort of illusion that's making me think that?.

Initially, I wondeerd if there was too much sand on view and the crop could be even tighter. The I wondered about changing the angle, moving right a bit and getting more of a 'looking along the line' effect of the huts going off into the distance. The I thought 'shut up', it's a beauty as it is - except for that urge to rotate. The light and texture on the trees is wonderful.

The second one is just sublime. A beautiful big sky. The light on the boat and on the headland over on the right is just wonderful. A lot of us may have striven to get the boat onto a thirds intersection, but you have shown that it's correct to do what feel right. The composition just works. Super piece of work.

Thanks Donald. I've had a play with the Beach House shot. I took the photo from the waters edge, so the perspective is probably out because there is no water in the shot.
    Does this look any better?

Excuse me for butting in but I think the first one is better. The verticals of the overhang supports are now sloping forwards as are the floors and roof lines. Obviously the ground the huts are built on is rising up to the left. Your original view was correct.

You're right, Keith. All I'm doing is spreading mayhem and confusion.

This second version definitely isn't correct.

There might be a little lens distortion in the verticals of the first photo which why you might be thinking it needs a little rotation Donald. I'll check it with Kerry a bit later.

My favourite is the bay shot anyway - nice and serene which was how it actually was on the day. It's not really a beach though - there aren't any waves to surf on!

    Hi Mal, Kerry,

This is definitely one to overlay a fine grid on, so the verticals can be quickly checked across the entire image; Ctrl+single apostrophe is the CS5 shortcut on my UK keyboard. Then it may indeed be a case of rotation+perspective correction to fix it, but working on the vertical edges only, ignoring the beach.

I'd like to think, viewing #2, it was a hot day

    Cheers,

I agree Dave, some of the architecture that Melbourne has to offer is beautiful. Unfortunately we by passed the city and headed to Mornington, next time though I'd really like to get into the city to capture some of those amazing buildings Have a fun time

I had a look at one of the beach house photos that I took from a different perspective (nothing really to mention). However I've come to the conclusion that a lot of the beach houses aren't actually built straight!

Hah, I see what you mean

Now; where is the 'beach hut correction' tab in ACR?

And people pay up to $200,000 AU for these!

Another photo from our Victoria trip - the only one I think that might be of remote interest to people

    I've called it "Portal".

It's not perfect - there's a blow out and it's a little messy. In hind sight I should have spent a bit more time studying the scene. But for me it feels like the first interesting photo I've taken in a while. Took me a while to figure out that I found it interesting though

    C&C welcome.

Sudden rush of beach hut shots. This one needs to be paired with this one.

Well they're obviously not in Australia! Kerry thinks ours have much more character
