    Geo-magnetic storm

For those of you who may not be aware, we are set to be hit with a level 2 storm from the sun on Tuesday. The side effects usually listed are in regards to satellite communications, air traffic and power grids. One not usually listed is the effects on the magnetic field and the aurora borealis. If you're in the right place at the right time you could set some amazing lights. This time of year the south pole will get more of a hit than the north but it will still be worth a watch. Heads up.

Anyone 'up-north' or 'down-south' see anything interesting? We had far too much heavy cloud cover to even give a chance of seeing anything.

It's now quite a few years since I've seen the aurora.

The web site www.spaceweather.com has information regarding space events, including auroras, and had predicted the event. Alas, the geomagnetic storm had faded before north america rotated around enough to catch the event. I was up several times in the night and checked out the windows - nothing.

There are many good photos posted at www.spaceweather.com and often the contributors include their camera settings, which is useful.
