    Speedlight YN-460 - Flashgun question

I haven't got hundreds to spend on one so was looking for a flashgun that's cheap, cheerful, and does the job.

Does anyone own a Speedlight YN-460?

    Any good?

Will it just work straight onto my Canon 550D?

    Speedlight YN-460 mk1 >>> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Electronic-S.../dp/B002RCUECS

    Speedlight YN-460 mk2 >>> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Electronic-S...8247594&sr=8-8

    or what does anyone recommend?

I want one for shooting very small things like insects, flower petals etc.

    Hi Dave,

Horses for courses - but personally, I'd give it a miss and save my pennies for at least a Canon 430EX II.

Found one review here that you might find informative (it's about 1/2 way down - inc an update right after it).

    Hope this helps.

If finances are tight, you might find a used 430EX in excellent condition. They are quite a bit less expensive than a new 430EX ii on this side of the pond but, are quite good flash units. In fact although the 430EX ii has some nice bells and whistles (I like the quick detach mechanism), the button that selects slave capability on the 430EX is quicker and IMO easier to use than the slave selection method on the 430EX ii...

Thanks Richard. Looks like they are going for around £130 second hand on a well known auction site.

Another option (that I've used before) that I think is pretty good for the cost and gives the 430EX II a run for its' money is the Metz 50. Plus it's a tad cheaper than the Canon.

Looks good Chris. £163 from Hong Kong. Know I don't know what to do lol. It looks like I'll have to wait and save some pennies.

    Horses for courses.

I bought a YN460 about a year ago because I desperately needed another Speedlight and didn't much care if it packed up the next day. Well it's still going strong and working perfectly. OK, it doesn't do iTTL, you have to guess your way round the controls because the instruction manual is probably for a Fiat Panda (in Chinese of course).

I have no idea how long it will continue to function, I just know it's a whole lot cheaper than my SB-900

I've used a canon 420ex for awhile and it is a very nice flash and you can get it from ebay for at least $100 or less.

I bought a used 430EX a while back for $185. I always look for used stuff first.

    Chris

P.S. Here's one on POTN for 150 pounds. You need to log on to see the for sale forum.

I purchased the YN467 flash from an ebay seller prior to eventually getting a Canon 580EX II. I found it to be a good flash for the money. I also bought the Yongnuo triggers, which also work very well, and they work with the Canon flash too, but only when it's in manual mode.

Re: Speedlight YN-460 - Flashgun question

I have heard great things about the low cost Yongnuo triggers, and just
    ordered two sets for myself.

There's also another outstanding flash unit available, designed with all the right
stuff for off-camera strobing. Manual only (no TTL), but has had superb reviews.
