Stories of abject failure and tragedy

The state of South Australia is the driest state, in the driestcontinent and the state is littered with failed ventures with one consistentcourse – drought. Our forefathers tried pushing too far inland when times weregood to be brought undone when the seasons turned.

This group is of old stock yards at Annandale Station in theChannel Country. When the waters run everything is fine. The tragedy here wasthe husband forced to leave the land and family behind in drought to find workin the city. On his return he found two dead children and a wife missing andeventually found off in the desert. They had run out of food and water. Ruins don't normally get to me but seeing the childrens graves and old wooden crosses made it very personal.

Those are very moving images Peter, especially with the background story you've provided.

Good stuff Peter. It helps others appreciate the isolation and harshness of the Australian Outback. B&W is ideal for this story.

Images #1 and #3 are excellent studies of old timbers and as such are, in my opinion, good images. But it with this one ...

I think it's a gorgeous composition. I can't think how you could have arranged these elements any better than you've presented them here. It's a beauty of a documentary image.

Thanks for your comments guys. I did get moved by the story of this palce and I think it helped me view the place in a different photographic mindset.

The image you mentioned Donald was almost the first I saw and I knew I wanted to capture it and walked around it a number of times before settling on this composition. I am glad you like it.

Below is an image of the small crosses marking the graves of eh children. Hopefully it gives you some feel for the place.
