    Let's Go Surfing

Went to the State Park yesterday becuase we were supposed to get some extra large waves from a tropical storm out in the Gulf of Mexico..and though they were decent, cannot say they were huge. I will go back on Sunday when the storm is supposed to turn our way. Anyway...Nina and I got some pretty decent surfing shots we'd like to share.

Out of the combined set, I keep coming back to this one. And I think the reason is the way the light has been caught running across the wave out in front of the surfer's leading hand. That, I think, really lifts it. If it wasn't there, we'd have been presented with a big wall of just one tone. As it is we can see much more on the way of shape and texture.

Nina had a good eye on that one and considering she was using less than a stellar lens, a good first effort at serious panning work. I took one of mine from above and converted it to B&W and think I like it a whole lot better in a monochromatic format.

I think I like the B&W's because they take me back to my old surfing days...lots of nostalgia.

You have some really nice photo's here Chris and i bet the surfers where loving the waves as you don't see waves getting this big in the state of Florida unless you have some kind of tropical depression coming by.

    Hi Chris,

My favourite of yours is the one you have also now monochromed.

That and Nina's second, as Donald chose.

If I may be critical, I thought your four originals were suffering inconsistent WB issues.

Can't argue on composition of any though, all good, just that some surfer 'poses' are better than others and together with wave and sprayshapes, that's mainly what differentiates them for me, but I think I'm rambling and stating the bloomin' obvious

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
I am having some monitor issues as I just printed three images that should have rocked but are coming out flat and lifeless. Looks like it might be time for a new monitor as this one is at least 8 years old...though may just need recalibration.

Those are some really fun shots Chris. What kind of equipment were you using?
The first 5 do seem to be a little off on white balance? I wonder why that is?

White balance problem has been corrected...used a Nikon D7000with a 55-300mm Nikkor lens. Nice lens and I find it quite good for semi macro work as well. Thanks for the nice words.

This is after a re-calibration of my monitor...something must have gone amiss when I moved my setup to another room.

    Hullo, friend.

Really like your #3, especially with you B&W conversion, and Nina's #2. In yours, the crop complements the tight, controlled lines. B&W allows you to appreciate the patterns. In Nina's, I like how the wave lines and light lead your eye in that nice sideways "J" pattern.

Give me a call when you can. I have a new phone but same phone #.

    Marie
