    Vacation Pic

On a recent vacation, I attempted to take some family portraits. This pic was taken with a single bare flash filling in light from the right while my wife and daughter sat against a shaded sand dune with the sun in their hair. Not bad for a hack?

Ok browsing the forum tonight, why is this post still at the top of the list?
Is this some sort of weird voodoo magic?

Willie or Jiro is fine by me.

Not really, Brian. It's a vBulletin bot (or subroutine program) wherein any posts that has no replies yet are being placed above the rest so members can comment on that and not left behind. Actually I was trying to post a comment but my issue was that I can't seem to directly pinpoint the things that I want to comment on.

I was thinking if it is better if your daughter somehow looks to her mother to make a stronger connection. The loose hairs covering a part of your wife's face is also an issue I see but I'm not so sure if it would make a big difference. I think, the biggest issue for me is the light background. If it is darker than the skin then I think it would help to make the shot stronger. Unfortunately I was too busy experimenting on my softbox to make an edit.

Brian, I hope I don't offend you by trying to edit the image. Here is one possible edit to give you an idea on how I tried to view the changes.

I agree with all of your points. This wasn't a pose, I caught my favorite ladies having a moment while setting up my stuff. I agree on the background, but this was at the client's request I did manage to get them to shoot it at sunset while it was at least shaded. I didn't quite have my flash figured out yet either
Maybe I could have done better with a DYI diffuser

I do like the darker background - good work.
Did you just dodge the background some?
Also thanks for explaining the vbulletin thingy.

    Thanks.

    In some ways, yes.

Also thanks for explaining the vbulletin thingy.
I think Sean was the one who explained it here at CiC. I merely re-stated it.
