Considering that you were so close to them, did you get their permission before taking the photo? I am usually hesitant in taking photos of people from such close a distance.

Nope, and the parent did not even notice me since this was a fast shot. When I saw the opportunity, I set the camera to Aperture Priority, ISO 400 so I can get a faster shutter speed for sharpness, and f/5.6 so if I miss the focus I still have a usable shot. Besides, there is nothing offensive or unethical on how they were portrayed in the scene so I still think I'm good here.
