    Gels for outdoor portraits

Can anyone recommend what would be the right type of gel to use for shooting a subject outdoors in the shade or during sunset/twilight? I basically want to add a hint of warmth in the tones.

Also, do you think it's worth purchasing those packs of gels with all the other colors or better to purchase larger sheets of just the colors you need?

    I appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi Chris,

Traditionally a CTO (1/4, 1/2, or full cut), but it really depends on how you want to interpret te scene. Basically a gel creates a different colour temp for the flash IN RELATION TO the ambient light. How you choose to interpret the image is really up to you in that you can choose to match the temps or you can drive them apart and then play with the overall white balance. I wrote a bit about it here if this helps.

No worries Chris, the only rule you really need to remember is "there are no rules"!

Having just said that, CTO is probably all you'll use. If you want me to send you some CTO strips, PM me with your phyical address and I'll cut some for you (I buy 20" x 24" sheets from B&H).
